Sand Hollow State Park
If you have not had the opportunity to see Sand Hollow State Park, you need to fit a visit into your schedule. Sand Hollow became a public state park in 2003 and is about 15 miles east of St. George. According to the Utah State Parks website, Sand Hollow is a “sprawling 20,000-acre park with recreation opportunities for everyone.” You can camp, fish, boat, bike, paddleboard and ride an off highway vehicle (OHV) on Sand Mountain which overlooks the Sand Hollow reservoir. The water is warm and a brilliant blue color. IRONMAN 70.3 was held in St. George this year and the swim part of the challenge took place at Sand Hollow.
On the south side of the reservoir you will find the Beach At Sand Hollow (BASH) where you can rent water craft and sand/trail craft of all kinds. Some of the water craft includes boats, pontoons, jet skis, canoes, pedal boats, kayaks and paddleboards. There is a new six-man paddleboard that is called the SOLfiesta that looks perfect for a party or family reunion. You can rent artic cats, can-ams, and atvs for fun in the sand. The BASH also offers great food, ice cream and drinks after your adventures in the sun.
Sand Hollow Park State Park opens early (6:00 am in the summer and 7:00 am in the winter months). It stays open until 10:00 pm during the summer and until 9:00 pm the rest of the year. A Utah State Parks Pass will gain you entrance into Sand Hollow.
