Choosing the right home for you and your family is not an easy decision. It takes a lot of time and planning to finding the perfect place. In spite of all
this work, or maybe because of it, a recen
survey showed that many homeowners regret part or all of their home buying decisions. To make sure you are happy with your home, here are six tips to keep in mind.

  1. Prioritize

Make a list of the things that are most important to you. Put them in order from most to least important. Consider what you may be willing to compromise on and what you can not. Think beyond just the house. What do you want in a neighborhood? In the local schools? Try to imagine what your ideal living situation would be and write it all down.

  1. Research

Research different areas, homes and schools before you even begin looking at houses. Have a real idea of what certain places have to offer. The more research you do, the better. It eliminates any surprises and you can walk into an open house or showing knowing exactly what to expect. You can examine a home more objectively and critically this way.

  1. Think Ahead

A home may be perfect for you now, but what about if you decide to have more kids? Or if your elderly mother moves in with you? You need to consider what could happen in the next 3-5 years or more. Don’t just buy a house for what will work right now. Buy one that will work for your future family.

  1. Walk Through Several Times

If you find a home you like, make sure to walk through it several times. Spend serious time in it, alone, outside of an open house. This gives you a chance to notice details you may not have seen before and to really imagine yourself in it.

  1. Don’t Get Caught Up in Competition

While house hunting is exhausting, it can also be really exciting. Sometimes, people get caught up in a bidding war and forget about their priority list and price range. If you find yourself competing with someone else, take a step back. Is this the house you really want for that price? Stepping out is perfectly fine if the price has gotten too high. Don’t get too caught up in the competition.

  1. Don’t Settle Too Much

After weeks or months of house hunting, you may just be ready to finish the process and get it over with. This could lead you to settling on a home you don’t love. While you almost always have to compromise on some things, you shouldn’t compromise on everything. Wait until you find a place you are truly comfortable with.

The last thing you want to do is suffer from buyers remorse. There are plenty of homes in St. George for you to choose from. Work hard with your real estate agent to make the best decisions possible. You’ll be much happier after you move in.
