On a recent trip to my parents, my mom discussed changing the carpet in the bedrooms of their new (to them) home. The carpets had been in the house for ten years and smell like the previous owner's dog. She knows she needs and wants to replace them, but can’t decide on the right carpet. It’s an expensive and long-term decision so you want to make sure you make the right choice. Here are a few things we learned when researching carpet.

Start with the Padding

The padding isn’t something you initially think about when choosing carpet because it isn’t visible, but it makes a bid different to the feel of your carpet. Padding helps hide imperfections on the floor and adds extra cushion. It may be tempting to skimp on the padding, but a good padding can lengthen the life of your carpet by preventing backing from coming apart.

Select your Style

There are many different styles to choose from. When considering what style to go with keep in mind how much traffic that area gets and the use of the room. For example, a hallway may require a more durable carpet, while a bedroom a more comfortable carpet.

Choose your Color

The color of the carpet is usually the most difficult decision. In most cases, you’ll want to choose a neutral color that will still look good if you decide to choose the wall color or room décor. It is a good idea to ask for carpet samples and see how different colors look in different lights in the room you are carpeting.
